Le 15 Sepembre, nous commençons la journée par une autre des péripéties de notre voyage. Nous demandons à la propriétaire de l'hôtel de nous appeler un taxi pour aller jusqu'au canyon Charyn. Après 20 min de voiture, le chauffeur s'arrête brusquement au milieu de nulle part (juste avant que la route devienne un chemin). Sans honte, il nous dit que si nous voulons aller plus loin, nous devons payer plus (que le prix convenu). Choqués, furieux et frustrés, nous voulons descendre du taxi...mais pour aller où ? Nous n'avons pas le choix et le chauffeur le sait. Nous commençons à nous plaindre, mais il ne veut rien entendre (et apparemment ne parle pas anglais). Finalement nous négocions et payons la moitié de ce qu'il demande ((2 euros seulement en vérité, mais quand même pour le principe) et nous finissons le trajet.

A l'entrée du parc, nous rencontrons un couple d'Israéliens, qui nous propose de partager un taxi pour aller au point de vue principal du canyon. Quand nous descendons de la voiture, nous sommes impressionnés par la grandeur et les couleurs. Le canyon fait 80 kilomètres de long et jusqu'à 300 mètres de profondeur à certains endroits. La partie qui se visite fait elle 3 kilomètres de long et 100 mètres de profondeur, elle est connue comme la vallée des châteaux, pour les formes que prennent les rochers. Certains disent que c'est une version miniature du Grand Canyon. Whaou !

On 15th September, we start our day with another funny story in our trip. We order a taxi to go to the Charyn Canyon. The taxi drives 20 min and stops suddenly in the middle of nowhere, just before the road becomes a path. Without any shame, he says that if we want to go further (until the canyon) we have to pay more (than it was decided previously). Chocked, angry and frustrated we want to leave the car... but, what to do ? We are in the middle of nowhere ! We have to stay and the taxi driver knows it ! We start to complain but the driver doesn't want to hear nothing (and apparently doesn't understand English). We finally bargain and pay half of the price he asks us (only 2 euros in fact, but still) and we resume driving.

At the entrance of the Charyn National Park we meet a couple of Israeli who suggest us to share a taxi to go to the main view of the Canyon. When we get out of the car we are captivated by the hugeness and the colours of the canyon. It is 80 kilometers long and until 300 meters deep at some parts. The part which can be visited is 3 kilometers long and 100 meters deep, it is known as the valley of castles named according to the shapes of the rocks. It is said that this is a miniature version of the Great Canyon. Whaou!

Il y a un chemin principal qui mène au « site écotouristique » (1 hôtel et un restaurant) à la fin du canyon près de la rivière Charyn. Comme nous avons prévu de passer la nuit ici, nous devons marcher avec nos sacs à dos, c'est un peu lourd mais la beauté du paysage nous fait oublier l'effort. Cela nous prend 40 minutes pour arriver à destination, et nous avons le temps d'admirer l'endroit.

There is a main path which leads to the Ecotourism site (1 hotel and 1 restaurant) at the end of the Canyon (near the Charyn river). As we plan to sleep at this hotel we have to walk with our backpacks. It is heavy but the beauty of the landscape makes us forget the pain ;) It is 40 minutes walking to reach the hotel and all along the way the canyon is impressive.

Il est l'heure de se reposer! Enveloppés par le canyon, nous prenons une bière et le déjeuner en écoutant la rivière, il nous faut aussi réfléchir à notre prochaine étape. Nous passons l'après -midi à nous balader dans le canyon et profiter de l'endroit. Il n'y a pas beaucoup de monde qui dort ici et au dîner nous rencontrons un couple de hollandais, Jasper et Kim. Ils ont loué une voiture à Almaty (la 2ème plus grande ville du pays) et ont roulé jusqu'ici, mais ils ont oublié de retirer assez d'argent kazakh pour les deux jours à venir. Or il n'y a pas de distributeur dans cette partie du pays. Ils nous font une offre : nous échangeons (une partie de) nos tengues (monnaie kazakhe) contre leurs euros et ils nous emmènent gratuitement aux lacs de Kolsai (notre prochaine étape). L'affaire est entendue !

Time to rest! "Wrapped" in the canyon and listening the Charyn river, we have a beer while discussing our next destination. We spend the afternoon in walking around and enjoying our time here. There are not much people at the Ecotourism site. At dinner we meet a Dutch couple, Jasper and Kim. They actually rented a car in Almaty (the 2nd biggest city in Kazakhstan) and drove until the Canyon. During the conversation they mention that they have no more Tengue (Kazakh money) and they couldn't find any ATM in the area. They make us an offer. We exchange (some of) our Tengue against their Euros and they drive us for free to Kolsai Lake (our next step). Deal agreed!

En fait notre chambre consiste en un bungalow en bois, ou plutôt une cabane: 4 murs et deux lits, pas d'arrivée d'eau. La nuit est plutôt froide, les couvertures pas assez épaisses et les lits trop durs, mais quand nous nous réveillons dans le canyon, tôt le lendemain matin, nous oublions tout de suite la mauvaise nuit ! Sur le chemin jusqu'à la voiture, garée en dehors du parc, nous pouvons voir des rapaces qui chassent et des sortes de mulots. La balade est agréable (et ça réveille;-)

In fact our room is not more than a wood bungalow (like a hut in reality – 4 walls and two beds, no water). The night was quite cold, the blankets not enough thick and the beds too hard, but when we wake up inside the canyon early on the morning the day after, next to the river, we directly forget the bad night! On the way back to the car (which was parked outside the canyon) we can see birds hunting and field rats. Nice walk!
