Nous nous réveillons le 18 septembre 2016 à Almaty, ancienne capitale du Kazakhstan sur la route de la Soie. Almaty veut dire « le père des pommes » car les pommiers y poussaient naturellement partout.

Au programme aujourd'hui : visite de la mosquée, du green bazar et de la cathédrale de l'Ascension. Ne pouvant visiter l’intérieur de la mosquée nous faisons rapidement le tour du bâtiment. Le dôme doré est très impressionnant et la mosaïque rappelle le beau ciel bleu que nous avons la chance d'avoir aujourd'hui !

On 18th September, we wake up in Almaty, the former capital city of Kazakhstan, located on one of the Silk Roads. Almaty means « Apple's Father », because the apple trees grow here naturally everywhere.

Today the visit of the mosque, the green bazaar and the Ascension cathedral is planned. As we can't visit the mosque indoor, we just walk around. The golden dome is impressive and the mosaic reminds us the blue of the sky that we are lucky to have today.

En chemin vers le bazar nous voyons les plus grosses pastèques que nous n'avons jamais vu ! Si tu achètes une pastèque entière comment fais-tu pour la transporter ? Haha

On the way to the bazaar, we see the biggest watermelon we have never seen. If you buy a whole one, how could you carry it ? Haha

Toujours en chemin vers le bazar nous passons devant le magasin d'usine de chocolat Paxat. Un paradis pour les amoureux du chocolat ! Cette marque est très appréciée au Kazakhstan. Notre amie kazakhe Auken nous avait fait goûter les gaufrettes à la cacahuète Paxat lors d'un dîner à Bangkok. Un régal !

Still on the road to the bazaar, we see the factory shop of the Paxat chocolate company. An heaven for chocolate lovers. This brand is really famous in Kazakhstan. Once in Bangkok, our Kazakh friend Auken have made us taste the Paxat peanut wafers during a diner. Yummy

Nous arrivons enfin au Bazar. Il est possible de trouver de tout : viandes, fromage, fruits, légumes, fruits secs, vêtements, médicaments, … De petites boîtes retiennent notre attention : du caviar ! Auken nous avait dit que le caviar est bon et peu cher au Kazakhstan. Il y a en du noir et du rouge orangé, avec des petits et gros grains. Nous ne goûterons pas cette fois-ci ne sachant pas lequel choisir.

We finally arrive to the green bazaar. It's possible to find everything: leat, chesse, fruits, vegetables, dry fruits, clothes, drugs,... Small boxes attract our gazes: caviar ! Auken told us that caviar is good and not expensive in Kazakhstan. There are brick red and black types, with small or big grains. We will not taste this time, as we don't know which one we should choose.

Une section du Bazar retient particulièrement l'attention de Julien : la charcuterie ! Nous goûtons pour la première fois (de notre vie) du saucisson de cheval. Étant la spécialité on se devait d'essayer, et c'est plutôt bon, mais très salé.

One part of the bazaar is especially interesting for Julien: the cold meat. We taste for the 1st time of our life the horse sausage. It is one of the specialty, so we had to try, and it's good, but very salty.

Étant Français on ne pouvait pas quitter le Bazar sans essayer le fromage kazakh. Nous optons pour un fromage frais (non salé). Les kazakhs consomment des friandises dérivées du fromage. Ce sont des petites boules de fromage dur mélangé à des épices et du sel. Nous repartons avec une boîte.

As French people, we can't leave the bazaar without trying the Kazakh cheese. We buy a fresh cheese (not salty). Kazakh people eat kind of cheese candies: they are small balls of dry cheese mixed with spices and salt, and we buy one box too.

Le Bazar se trouve à deux pas du parc des 28 gardes de Panfilov ce qui nous donne l’occasion d'une balade et d'une pause pique-nique. L'intérêt principal du parc est la cathédrale de l'Ascension, construite en bois. Pour l'anecdote c'est le seul bâtiment resté presque intact après le tremblement de terre de 1911.

The bazaar is nearby the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, so we go there for a walk and having a picnic. The most interesting place in the park is the Zenkov cathedral, built with wood. By the way, it's the only building which was almost untouched after the earthquake in 1911.

Nous commençons notre pique-nique par goûter au lait de jument, une des boissons nationales. Les Kazakhs appellent cette boisson le « Champagne kazakh », car c'est naturellement fermenté et donc gazeux.

A l'ouverture de la bouteille, le lait s'expulse tel du coca que l'on aurait secoué, ce qui vide la moitié de la bouteille parterre. Après avoir bien rigolé et tout essuyé, nous goûtons enfin : c'est gazeux, très légèrement salé et épais, avec un arrière goût de champagne en effet ! A la première gorgée, nous n'aimons pas car c'est un peu aigre mais le palet s'habitue petit à petit.

We start our picnic with tasting the horse milk, one of the national drinks. Kazakh people call this drink the “Kazakh Champagne”, because it's naturally fermented and so sparkling.

When we open the bottle, it explodes like a coke bottle which would have been shaken. So half of the bottle is on the ground. After laughing and cleaning, we finally try: it's sparkling, a little bit salty and thick, with indeed an aftertaste of champagne. The first swallow is really good, because it's sour, but then we get used to.

Nous sommes dimanche et nous avons la chance d'assister à la sortie d'un mariage orthodoxe ! Nous pouvons même entrer dans la cathédrale puisque la cérémonie est publique (tout le monde le fait). Toutes les femmes portent un voile sur leur tête et sont très joliment habillées.

We are Sunday and there is an orthodox weeding. We even can go inside the cathedral, as everybody do it. All the women wear scarves on their heads and are well dressed.

La cathédrale est bondée, il est difficile d'apercevoir les mariés. Les images bibliques au mur sont entourées de dorures ce qui donne un aspect brillant à la pièce.

A la sortie de la cérémonie nous prenons le temps d'observer les invités. Beaucoup doivent être expatriés ou être ici pour l'occasion, à entendre les discussions en anglais un peu partout. Il y a même un monsieur en kilt ! Les mariés repartent dans leur limousine et les invités commencent à s'en aller.

The cathedral is crowded and it's difficult to see the bride and the groom. The biblic paintings are decorated with golden leaves, which makes the place shining.

At the end of the ceremony, we take time to look at the people. Most of them are probably expatriated (or coming from abroad), as we can hear of lot of people speaking English. There is even one guy with a Scottish kilt. The bride and the groom leave in a limo and other invited people start to leave too.

Lundi 19 septembre 2016 nous décidons de nous reposer. Nous sortons qu'en fin d'après-midi pour acheter des places pour l'opéra. Nous voulons un ticket pour demain et la dame au guichet nous propose de choisir nos places dans l'amphithéâtre. Le prix diffère en fonction de l' éloignement avec la scène et l 'orchestre. Après relecture nous réalisons que les places sont pour le 20 mais... le mois prochain ! Heureusement que les alphabets cyrillique et latin se ressemblent un peu ! Nous annulons donc nos plans et partons manger.

On 19th September, we decided to have a rest. We just go out in the afternoon to buy tickets to go to the opera. We want to buy tickets for tomorrow and the women at the counter proposes us to choose our seats in the amphitheater. The prices depend on the location of course. After a while we understand that the show is on 20th...but October. Luckily Cyrillic and Latin alphabets are close enough. So we change our plans and go to have dinner.

Ce soir nous décidons de goûter aux spécialités kazakhs : beshbarmak pour Julien et lagman pour Flavie. Le beshbarmark est un plat à base de viande et saucisse de cheval accompagnées de pâtes plates. Le Lagman est un plat à base de viande de mouton accompagnée de pâtes d'amidon de blé et de légumes (poivrons et tomates). Pour finir nous partageons un dessert à base de crème et de miel (balkaimak). Nous nous régalons !

It's time to taste Kazakh specialties: beshbarmak for Julien and lagman for Flavie. Beshbarmak is prepared with horse meat and flat pasta. Lagman is prepared with mutton meat, wheat noodles and vegetables (tomatoes and pepper sweet).To finish, we share a dessert with cream and honey (balkaimak). Very good dinner !

Le 20 septembre nous partons visiter Koke Kobe, littéralement la « Montagne verte ». Nous rejoignons le téléphérique à pied. Il est agréable de marché dans Almaty. Il y a de l'espace entre les bâtiments, les espaces verts sont entretenus et les piétons sont en sécurité (les voitures s'arrêtent pour laisser passer les piétons et ne les klaxonnent pas lorsqu'ils traversent au passage piéton, contrairement à certains pays que l'on a visité).

The day after, we go to visit Koke Kobe, the “green mountain”. We walk to the cable car, and it's quite enjoyable, there are some same space between the buildings, a lot of trees and green spaces, and walkers are feeling themselves safe (cars stop to let them cross the roads and don't horn them when they are walking on the walkway, like in other countries we have visited).

Après avoir pris le téléphérique, nous arrivons au sommet de cette colline qui culmine à 1100 mètres et permet d'apprécier la vue sur le sud-est d'Almaty. L'endroit est bien aménagé, il y a même un zoo ! Sur un mur de photos montrant les personnalités venues visiter l'endroit, on peut trouver Gérard Depardieu.

C'est déjà la fin d'après-midi et le soleil commence à se coucher. Nous restons jusqu'à ce qu'il fasse nuit et nous redescendons la montage à pied, ce qui donne l'occasion d'une petite balade nocturne.

Once at the top (1100 meters high), we can enjoy the view on the South-East of Almaty. The place is well arranged, there is even a zoo. On a wall with the pictures of all the celebrities who came here, we can see Gérard Depardieu (French actor).

It's already the end of the afternoon and the sun starts to be low in the sky. We stay until it's dark and go down the hill by foot.

Le 21 septembre journée sportive : randonnée jusqu'au grand lac d'Almaty à 2500 mètres d'altitude ! Nous prenons d'abord un bus (qui n'était pas évident à trouver) qui nous dépose à 16 km du lac. Nous savons qu'il est possible de prendre un raccourci en suivant l'énorme canalisation qui part du lac et descend dans la vallée. Nous marchons alors une dizaine de kilomètres, au début sur la route puis le long de la canalisation. L'automne commence, les feuilles sont jaunes orangées. Ce début de balade est plutôt agréable.

21st September is a sportive day: hiking to the Big Lake of Almaty at 2500 meters high. We first take the bus (which is not easy to find) which let us 16 km far from the lake. We know there is a shortcut if we follow the water pipe which goes from the lake along the valley. We walk around 10 km, on the road at the beginning and then along the pipe. Fall is coming and the leaves are yellow red. It's quite nice.

On fait une pause près de la rivière dans laquelle nous ne trempons pas un pied tant l'eau est froide!Après le repas, nous commençons à longer la canalisation. Les derniers kilomètres sont très pentus et pour être honnête nous faisons presque de l'escale !

We have rest near the river, in which we are not going to have a bath as it's very cold. After lunch, we start to walk along the pipe. The last kilometers are really steep, and to be honest it's almost climbing.

Nous sommes bien contents d'arriver enfin au lac ! Il est magnifique, l'eau est bleu « glaçé ». Malheureusement notre moment d'admiration est très vite écourté par un homme en uniforme qui nous explique que nous sommes dans une zone interdite. Nous comprenons que c'est un garde frontière et que nous nous trouvons dans la zone frontalière avec le Kirghizstan, interdite au public ! Après un petit interrogatoire, il nous laisse partir en nous demandant de rebrousser chemin.

We are quite happy to arrive at the lake. It's amazing, the water is “iced blue”. Unfortunately we don't enjoy a lot as a man in uniform comes to explain us that we are in a forbidden area. We understand that he's a border guard and that we are in border area with Kyrgyzstan, forbidden for public. After questioning us, he lets us go.

En rebroussant chemin nous passons devant le panneau « Attention Zone Frontalière » que nous n'avions pas vu. Il n'était cependant pas indiquer « Interdit d'entrer ».

On the way back, we see the notice board “Attention! Boundary zone!”. But it's not written “Entrance forbidden”.

Finalement nous arrivons à l'endroit autorisé pour admirer le lac, c'est-à-dire à 500 de l'endroit interdit. La vue est superbe ! Il est déjà 17h et la température commence à descendre, or nous sommes en tee-shirt. Nous entamons donc notre descente dans l’espoir d'être pris en stop. 15 minutes plus tard une voiture accepte de nous redescendre dans la vallée.

Finally we find the allowed place to see the lake, i.e. 500 meters far from the forbidden one. The view is nice ! It's already 5 pm and the temperature is decreasing, yet we have no sweaters. So we start to go down and 15 minutes of hitchhiking later we found a car to bring us back to Almaty.

Nous arrivons à Almaty à la tombée de la nuit. Avant de retrouver notre hôtel, nous faisons une courte balade dans le Parc du 1er Président. Les montagnes sont vraiment très proches de la ville, et la vue est grandiose quand le temps est dégagé comme ce soir.

We arrive in Almaty at the dusk. Before going back to our hotel, we have a short walk in the 1st President's Park. Mountains are very close to the city and the view is amazing when the weather is not cloudy, like tonight.

Voici Sarkozy le chat du gérant de notre hôtel. Il avait appelé son premier chat Nicolas. Et bien, qui aurait penser croiser un jour dans sa vie un Kazakh fan de Nicolas Sarkozy ?!

Demain c'est déjà la fin de notre première étape au Kazakhstan et nous partons pour le Kirghizstan.

Here is Sarkozy, the cat of our hotel's owner. He called his first cat Nicolas. Who would have imagined to meet once in his life a Kazakh guy found of Nicolas Sarkozy ?!

Tomorrow it's already the end of our first stop in Kazakhstan and we will leave to Kyrgyzstan.
